Cobot frequently asked questions

What people ask before automating: payload, reach, maintenance, programming and where a cobot actually pays off.

12 questions

  • 01What programming languages are used for cobots?

Python, ROS (Robot Operating System), C/C++ or Java: widely used in robotics for their versatility and extensive library support. There is also block-based (Blockly) or graphical programming, a visual interface where you build the program by dragging blocks. Many cobots are also programmed from the teach pendant, where the operator physically guides the arm and records positions. And there is point-to-point programming: a person moves the arm through each motion of the task and the robot records action, speed, trajectory and position.

  • 02What is the minimum and maximum payload of a cobot?

There are models for different kinds of operation. Payload starts at 3 kg and tops out at 30 kg on the largest model of the FR series.

  • 03What is the minimum and maximum reach of a cobot?

Reach generally spans 500 mm to 1500 mm, which covers tasks of almost any size. In the FR series the range runs from 622 mm to 1900 mm.

  • 04What end effectors work with a cobot?

Finger grippers, vacuum grippers, welding torches, sanding units and more. Customizing the end effector for a specific job is the norm, not the exception.

  • 05How long does it take to set up and program a cobot?

It depends on the complexity of the application: from a few hours to a couple of days. You can also hire an integrator to handle programming and integration.

  • 06What maintenance does a cobot require?

Very little. Periodic cleaning and inspection, low-friction synthetic lubricant on the joints and the occasional software update. Calibration is recommended, not mandatory.

  • 07What does a cobot cost?

It depends on the model and the specs, mainly payload and reach: lower payload and shorter reach mean a lower price. Most units include the arm, the control box and the software. We don't publish prices online in Mexico because every unit is quoted against the application, the volume and the plant; ask an advisor.

  • 08Cobot or industrial robot?

A cobot usually costs less overall: it is easy to reprogram, needs minimal maintenance and returns the investment quickly. You normally don't need cages or extra safety equipment for an operator to work beside it, and simple programming cuts integration time and cost.

  • 09Can I use a cobot for welding?

Yes. Welding is one of the fastest-growing applications, thanks to flexibility, ease of programming and the robot's ability to work next to the welder. A welding cobot raises productivity, improves safety and delivers consistent seams.

  • 10Can I use a cobot to automate a CNC shop?

Yes. Loading and unloading parts and tending the machine are exactly where it pays off best. Its flexibility, easy programming and safety features make it ideal for raising efficiency without pulling the operator out of the process.

  • 11Can I use a cobot to automate a machine shop?

Yes. Part loading and unloading, machine tending and material handling. It works safely beside the operator and is cost-effective even for small and mid-size shops just starting to automate.

  • 12Can I use a cobot in a kitchen or a restaurant?

Yes. It can take over repetitive prep, cooking and cleaning tasks. It brings precision and consistency, and leaves the staff on the work that needs judgment.
